Police Officer Qualifications
Applicants must meet all employment qualifications prior to completing an application.  All applicants must:

  1. Be a U.S. Citizen
  2. 21 years of age
  3. Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
  4. Have completed 2 years satisfactory experience as a certified sworn law enforcement officer in the state of Illinois or
    1. Possess an Associates Degree with at least a C average (or its equivalent) with an emphasis in criminal justice, or
    2. Possess 60 college credit hours with at least a C average (or its equivalent) with an emphasis in criminal justice, or
    3. Possess Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree from a four year college or university.
  5. Possess a valid driver's license which must be shown as identification during all phases of testing.

Testing itinerary All applicants must:

  • Attend an orientation session
  • Pass a physical fitness test
  • Pass a written exam
  • Pass a thorough background investigation
  • Pass a polygraph test
  • Pass an in-depth psychological and comprehensive medical exam
  • Must have vision correctable to 20/20
  • Complete the 16 week Police training academy
  • Complete and pass the 17 week Field Training Officer's Program

Residency Requirements Certified patrol officers must reside in the Village of Tinley Park within 1 year after date of employment.



Basic Police Training Academies used by the Tinley Park Police Dept.

The Tinley Park Police Department is also a member of Northeast Multi-Regional Training (NEMERT).  The Department believes in continued education and training in order to provide career development opportunities.

Current Benefits

Uniforms and equipment All uniforms, jackets leather gear, and body armor are provided.  Officers receive a yearly uniform allowance.
